PROGRAMME

On the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT), the Embassy of France in Myanmar and the French Institute are organizing, on behalf of the EU and in collaboration with Colors Rainbow, an event about the legal protection of LGBTI people and the legal framework in Myanmar.

The event will feature Myanmar documentary “May We Help You”. The movie will be screened in Myanmar language with English subtitles. The screening will start at 6:30pm and will be followed by a panel discussion and a cocktail reception.

ABOUT DOCUMENTARY & PANEL DISCUSSION

The LGBT population in Myanmar has been facing decades of physical and verbal abuse, discrimination and harassment due to their sexual orientation and gender identity and Expression (SOGIE). While the situation is improving, the country’s legal system does not provide protection to LGBT individuals and the Myanmar Penal Code still criminalizes same sex relationships. In the documentary, victims from Yangon, Mandalay and Myitkyina, share their stories of abuse, heads of police react to the allegations and NLD politicians give their views on the many cases of police harassment.

The panel discussion will allow the audience to better understand the challenges at stake and the need for legal reform. It will also focus on how to better protect Myanmar’s LGBT population, and what should be done to work towards decriminalization of same-sex behavior.

We will be joined for the discussion by U Kyaw Hoe, Union Legal Aid Board member and member of the Legal Advisory Board of the LGBT Rights Network, Maik Fischer, First Advisor, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and Zar Li Aye, Advocate and Senior Legal Advisor, International Commission of Jurists Myanmar. The discussion will be moderated by Nang Hsu, Advocate and Coordinator of the Access to Justice Programme at Colors Rainbow.
